Evensong for the Second Sunday in Lent — February 25 — will begin with a prelude at 4:45 p.m. of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach and Louis Vierne by Marco Jimenez, guest organist. Jimenez is a student of music director and organist Dwight Thomas.
Evensong, at 5 p.m., will include the "Short Service" of Orlando Gibbons, Purcell's anthem, Hear My Prayer, O Lord, and Craig Phillips's God So Loved the World. English composer Orlando Gibbons (1583- 1625) was a keyboard player in the court of King Charles I and organist at Westminster Abbey. He died at the age of 31 and is buried in Canterbury Cathedral. He was one of England’s great early music composers and the last great composer of the polyphonic style. The Cathedral Chamber Choir will sing, and a light reception follows.
