Give Shoes — and Smiles — For the New School Year Sophie Preston, 9, a member of our congregation, says nothing makes her feel more ready to take on a new school year than a new pair of shoes.
"Everybody should feel that way," she said. So she approached Canon Katie Churchwell to ask whether St. Peter's would be willing to support a shoe drive for Campbell Park Elementary. Of course! During June we'll collect shoes to put smiles on kids' faces when school starts in August.
Look for the dropbox in the Narthex. Here's how you can participate:
* Donate a gift card to any store that sells shoes.
* Donate new shoes in any child or adult size that would be appropriate for kids to wear (think playgrounds and sidewalks)
* Or donate gently-worn shoes of any size — kids' feet come in all sizes — that would be appropriate for kids. (No stilettos, no men's dress shoes; think closed-toe tennis shoes or loafers.)
* New socks welcome also! The new shoes will go to students at Campbell Park.
The gently-worn shoes will be delivered to Clothes for Kids, on Second Avenue S at 34th Street, a nonprofit where children who qualify for free lunches get a week's worth of clothes twice a year. Students at Campbell Park represent a large part of the population that gets clothes from Clothes to Kids.
Not having something as basic as a new pair of shoes can be a real stumbling block for kids as the school year begins. (And parents know how fast kids' feet grow!)
"Please help us put a smile on kids' faces with a gift of new shoes," Sophie says.
